Japanese Wisdom — The Meaning of an Unspoken Subject
Why Saying Less Can Mean More
Why Saying Less Can Mean More
One interesting characteristic of Japanese is that sentences often do not need a subject.
For example, someone asks:
「あの映画、行った?」
"Did you go see that movie?"
"Did you go see that movie?"
You might answer:
「行ったよ。」
"Yes, I did."
"Yes, I did."
But what happens if you say:
「私は行ったよ。」
"I went."
"I went."
Both sentences communicate the same fact, but they do not necessarily mean the same thing.
The first is a natural, straightforward answer.
The second emphasizes "I," suggesting a contrast with other people. It may imply, "I went, but I don't know about the others."
In English, saying "I" is grammatically normal. In Japanese, explicitly saying "I" can introduce an additional meaning.
This is an important lesson in Japanese communication.
Words are not always necessary to communicate meaning. Sometimes, adding words changes the message.
Japanese wisdom teaches us that communication is not simply about what we say.
It is also about what we choose not to say.
