Why do Japanese people cherish Cherry Blossom / Sakura?

Cherry blossom is beautiful but very short lived. It resembles life itself. Lives are short so you must cherish the time you have with each other. So every year, when sakura blossoms, Japanese people celebrate by eating and drinking around sakura trees.
