追いつけ追い越せではだめ
昔から、日本は他国に遅れをとっていると感じ、それを早急に追い越すことが基本的な考え方でした。この発想は、かつて鎖国から抜けて西洋の技術を取り入れようとした時期から始まったのかもしれません。"追いつけ追い越せ"の考えは、日本の発展の歴史において重要な要素となりました。しかし、昭和末期になると、日本は多くの分野で世界最高水準の製品を生み出すようになりました。その結果、日本には進むべき目標が少なくなりました。
安定した生活と世界でも最高水準の治安を備えた日本は、残念ながら競争心が薄れてしまいました。これは当然のことで、最も安全な国で生活し、医療も最高水準、製品も世界トップクラスです。これでは新しい挑戦を迎える気力がなくなるのも不思議ではありません。その結果、日本は"追いつけ追い越せ"の目標から外れてしまいました。こうして中国や韓国が台頭する契機となりました。
また、日本人は基本技術を生み出す力がないとされています。日本人の強みは基本技術ではなく、その周辺のアプリケーションにあるとされています。しかし、現在の技術の多くは、国内の需要に特化しており、国際的な市場を意識していません。日本の技術は進化が鈍く、トレンドに追いつかない側面が見受けられます。新しいアイデアを生み出し、それを広く認知する環境がもっと整備されることを期待します。
Chasing and overtaking is not enough
Historically, Japan has had a fundamental mindset of catching up and surpassing other nations at the earliest opportunity. This perspective may have originated from the time when Japan emerged from its period of seclusion and sought to adopt Western technologies. The notion of "chasing and overtaking" has been a crucial element in Japan's developmental history. However, by the end of the Showa era, Japan began producing world-class products in many fields, and as a result, it found itself with fewer challenges to overcome.
Japan, with its stable living conditions and the best safety globally, unfortunately saw a decline in its competitive spirit. It's natural; living in the safest country with top-notch healthcare and producing world-class products led to a diminishing drive for new challenges. Consequently, Japan shifted away from the goal of "chasing and overtaking." This shift provided an opportunity for the rise of China and South Korea.
Moreover, Japanese people are often said to lack the ability to generate fundamental technologies. The strength of the Japanese lies not in basic technology but in the application surrounding it. However, much of the current technology is geared towards domestic consumption and lacks a global perspective. Japanese technology tends to evolve slowly and often falls behind current trends. It is hoped that an environment fostering the creation of novel ideas and widespread recognition of such ideas will be more robustly established in Japan.
